Macroom Massage & Holistic Clinic
Aromatherapy massage is Swedish massage therapy using massage oil or lotion that contains essential oils (highly concentrated plant oils). During an aromatherapy massage, you inhale these essential oil molecules or absorb them through your skin
It is a type of treatment, mostly holistic in nature that usually uses natural things and plant extract as raw material for our customer’s personal and mental wellbeing. Sometimes it is also called essential oil therapy. In aromatherapy, aromatic essential oils are used since they have medicinal properties to improve our customers’ bodies, minds, and spirits. Recently gained some noise and light aromatherapy is getting more recognition in science and medicine to enhance physical and mental health.
Humans have used aromatherapy for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations of China, India, Egypt and elsewhere incorporated aromatic plant components like resins, balsams and oils in their daily life to enhance their skin and body. These natural substances are being used for medical and religious purposes for centuries. As we all know, they are pretty suitable for the human body and the mind.
The Persians did the distillation of essential oils in the 10th century. However, the practice of oil distillation may have been used earlier by Germanys back in the 16th century. French doctors recognized the potential of essential oils for treating diseases in the 19th century.
However, French and German doctors still recognize the role of natural botanicals in treating certain kinds of diseases. French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefos coined the term “aromatherapy” in his 1937 book on the subject. He first discovered the potential of lavender to treat burns. This book describes the use of essential oils in the treatment of diseases. It has also got recognition in the field of art and science.
Aromatherapy uses the following products to work through skin absorption:
You can use these individually or in any combination. There are about a hundred kinds of essential oils. Generally speaking, people use the most popular oil. Essential oils can be bought online, at health food stores and some general supermarkets. It is crucial to buy from reputable manufacturers because the FDA does not regulate these oils. It ensures that you are purchasing a quality product that is 100% natural. It should not contain any additives or synthetic ingredients. There is a lack of research supporting aromatherapy to treat Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and heart disease.
What’s the difference between an aromatherapy massage and a regular therapeutic massage?
An aromatherapy massage includes all the benefits of a regular massage, (improved circulation, lymph drainage etc.) with the added benefit of a blend of essential oils tailored to your specific needs.
Before the treatment our therapist will go through a questionnaire with you to create a unique blend that’s most suitable for you on the day. The results of your consultation will affect which oils are chosen from the base oils. These oils can be tailored to suit your skin type and the essential oils.
The oils work in 2 ways, they enter the body through the layers of skin and enter the blood stream. This is where the chemicals react and have the desired effect on the body and also their aroma stimulates the limbic system through our olfactory senses. The Limbic system is part of the brain which deals with our emotions and can trigger long lost memories and feelings. Which is why certain smells can transport is back to childhood holidays or that perfume that your Gran used to wear. It’s one of the most powerful areas of the brain and how it functions is still being researched.
In some areas, the scientific evidence on aromatherapy is undoubtedly limited. Each essential oil has its very own unique therapeutic property, uses and effects. Blending essential oils into a synergistic blend can provide you with benefits beyond reason.
